Information about Egypt and its history
People of Egypt
Egyptians are friendly, hospitable and modest. They also have a sense of balance and moderation. Problems in Egypt, however, have a tendency to resist solutions. Everybody seems to accept that trouble will somehow work itself out. A key to enjoying any visit to Egypt is infinite patience.
Arts, Culture and Music of Egypt
Painting has been part of the Egyptian lifestyle since the first daubs were applied to the Pyramid of Unas at Saqqara in 24th century BC. But it was the Pharaohs of the New Kingdom who were especially keen on decorating the interiors of their tombs with vivid images of the afterworld and resurrection. Contemporary Egyptian painting was greatly influenced by western art and it wasn't until halfway through this century that Egyptian painters began to break away from these influences. Popular music in Egypt meant, until recently, the ubiquitous voice of Om Kolthum, the 'mother of Egypt'. She died in 1975 but her music and her legend outlive her. Her songs, based on poetry and operettas, are the best known Egyptian music to western ears.
Economy of Egypt
Egypt has had a very strong economical growth in recent years, a situation that continues up to the present date. In July 2000 it was reported that Egyptian non-oil exports had risen 12% in the last 9 months, but despite the positive growth, Egypt still exhibits extreme differences between rich and poor, and is by all means still to be considered a poor country. However, a growing number of the inhabitants can be considered as middle class or rich.
