Drinking And Driving:-The legal limit of alcohol in your bloodstream is 0.08%. If you are caught drivingwhilst over this limit severe penalties can be imposed including fines and/or imprisonment.

Driving Licence:-The minimum age at which a full UK driving licence holder may drive a temporarily imported car is 18.

Fines:-The Maltese authorities do not impose on the spot fines but any fines issued must be settled before departure.

Fuel:-Unleaded petrol (95 and 98 RON) readily available. The carrying of fuel in a can is permitted but not aboard ferries. Diesel is also available but LPG is not.

Lights:-Spotlights (foglamps) are prohibited in Malta.

Motorcycles:-Crash helmets are compulsary whilst riding a motorcycle.

Motor Insurance:-Third party insuance in the minimum compulsary.

Seat Belts:-If seat belts are fitted to the vehicle, it is compulsary that they be worn.

Speed Limits:-The following are standard speed limits for private vehicles without trailers, although they may be varied by signs. In built up areas the speed limit is 31mph (50kph). Outside of built up areas the limit is 49mph (80kph).

Other Information:-As in the UK, the Maltese drive on the left and overtake on the right. It is recommended that a warning triange be taken in case of a need to warn other motorists of accidents. A vehicle may be temporarily imported under the cover of a temporary import permit which is valid for 3 months.
