People of Portugal

Portugal still remains a traditional and conservative country. This is thanks in main to a strong Catholic influence and decades of repression under salazar. Religious festivals to honour patron saints (Romarias) are taken very seriously, and are almost as important as the weekends football results.

The local menus consist mainly of wine and seafood, whilst arabesque, dreamy styling are the strongest features of the local architechture.

 

Arts, Culture and Music of Portugal

Portugese culture is based on their past from Prehistoric times up until the times of the Moorish and Roman invasions. Each in turn have left their legacy in rich archaeological remains, which include cave paintings at Escoral, the Roman township of Conimbriga, and at Évora, The Temple Of Diana. Also featured, are the typical Moorish arhcitecture of the Southern Portugese towns of Olhão and Tavira.

 

For centuries, The arts of Portugal have had their foreign influences. These include Flemish, French and Italian. Portugal is renowned for it's explorersm and they are famed for their disoveries of the Orient and Brazil. These in turn brought their own influences, wealth, gold and jewels, which helped feed the Baroque style of decoration.

Economy of Portugal

Essentially, Portugal is an agricultural land, exporting 75% of it's cattle and agricultural production.

The wine culture dominates the activities to the North of the Douro. This is where you can find Porto wine. Annually, around 15 Million litres of wine are produced.

Portugal are Europe's largest producer of cork oak, and also have a very large importance in the production and exportation of tinned food as well as olive oil. Also, Due to Portugal's vast coastline, fishing plays a very big part in the national economy.
